Advanced Cefepime Therapy for Serious Hospital-Acquired Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Challenges
Category: ANTI BIOTICS
Product Description
SUPASIL® Injection (Cefepime) is a fourth-generation cephalosporin antibiotic indicated for the treatment of serious bacterial infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. With broad-spectrum activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens, including key hospital-acquired pathogens, SUPASIL® is an important therapeutic option in the management of severe and complicated infections.
Its stability against many β-lactamases and activity against a broad range of clinically significant pathogens make SUPASIL® well suited for the treatment of serious hospital-acquired (nosocomial) infections and as part of antimicrobial stewardship strategies where appropriate. SUPASIL® is widely utilized in critical care, emergency, and inpatient settings for the management of severe infections requiring prompt and effective antibacterial therapy.
Mode of Action:
SUPASIL® exerts its bactericidal effect by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis and disrupting peptidoglycan formation. Its enhanced penetration through the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria enables rapid bacterial cell death and broad-spectrum antibacterial activity.
Indications
SUPASIL® Injection is indicated for the treatment of serious bacterial infections caused by susceptible microorganisms, including:
- Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs), including hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP).
- Pneumonia (community-acquired and hospital-acquired).
- Febrile neutropenia.
- Complicated urinary tract infections (cUTIs), including pyelonephritis.
- Complicated intra-abdominal infections (in combination with metronidazole where indicated).
- Skin and soft tissue infections.
- Septicemia/Bacteremia.
- Empiric therapy for severe infections where broad-spectrum antimicrobial coverage is required.
Contraindications
Supasil (Cefepime for Injection) is contraindicated in patients with:
- Known hypersensitivity to cefepime, other cephalosporin antibiotics, or any component of the formulation.
- A history of severe immediate hypersensitivity reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis) to penicillins, monobactams, carbapenems, or other β-lactam antibiotics, due to the potential for cross-reactivity.
Warnings and Precautions
- Use with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis, as antibiotic-associated colitis, including Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhoea, may occur.
- Dose adjustment is required in patients with renal impairment to reduce the risk of neurotoxicity.
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi.
- Neurological adverse reactions, including encephalopathy, confusion, myoclonus, seizures, and non-convulsive status epilepticus, have been reported, particularly in patients with renal dysfunction receiving unadjusted doses.
- As with other antibiotics, Supasil should be used only for confirmed or strongly suspected bacterial infections to help reduce the development of antimicrobial resistance.
