Generic Name:
Category: CARDIOVASCULAR
Product Description
Suvast® contains Atorvastatin, a potent HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) indicated for the management of dyslipidaemia and the prevention of cardiovascular disease. By inhibiting cholesterol synthesis in the liver, Suvast® effectively lowers low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), total cholesterol, triglycerides, and apolipoprotein B, while modestly increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C).
Suvast® is recommended as an adjunct to diet, exercise, and lifestyle modification to reduce cardiovascular risk in patients with elevated cholesterol levels or those at high risk of cardiovascular events.
Indications
Suvast® is indicated as an adjunct to diet and lifestyle modification for:
- Primary hypercholesterolaemia (including heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia)
- Mixed dyslipidaemia (Fredrickson Types IIa and IIb)
- Hypertriglyceridaemia (Fredrickson Type IV)
- Primary dysbetalipoproteinaemia (Fredrickson Type III)
- Homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (as an adjunct to other lipid-lowering therapies or when such therapies are unavailable)
- Prevention of cardiovascular events, including myocardial infarction, stroke, angina, and the need for coronary revascularisation in patients at high cardiovascular risk
- Reduction of LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and apolipoprotein B in adults, adolescents, and children (where clinically indicated)
Contraindications
Suvast® is contraindicated in patients with:
- Known hypersensitivity to atorvastatin or any component of the formulation.
- Active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations of serum transaminases.
- Pregnancy.
- Breastfeeding.
- Women of childbearing potential who are not using effective contraception.
- Concomitant use with certain medicines that markedly increase atorvastatin exposure where contraindicated according to local prescribing information (e.g., specific antiviral regimens).
Dosage and Administration
Suvast® should be taken once daily, with or without food, preferably at the same time each day. Patients should continue a cholesterol-lowering diet during treatment.
Adults
- Starting dose: 10 mg or 20 mg once daily, depending on baseline LDL cholesterol and cardiovascular risk.
- Patients requiring greater LDL-C reduction may start with 40 mg once daily.
- Dosage may be adjusted at intervals of 4 weeks or longer based on therapeutic response.
- Maximum dose: 80 mg once daily.
Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease
- 10–80 mg once daily, depending on the patient’s overall cardiovascular risk and treatment goals.
Paediatric Patients (where indicated)
- 10 mg once daily as the usual starting dose.
- Dose may be increased according to clinical response and specialist recommendation.
- Maximum recommended dose: 20 mg daily in most paediatric patients.
Elderly Patients
- No routine dosage adjustment is required.
Patients with Renal Impairment
- No dosage adjustment is generally required.
Patients with Hepatic Impairment
- Use with caution in patients with a history of liver disease.
- Contraindicated in patients with active liver disease.
