Supaquin® 500 mg Tablets (Levofloxacin)

Supaquin

Category: ANTI BIOTICS

Product Description

Supaquin® contains Levofloxacin 500 mg, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic with potent bactericidal activity against a wide range of Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and atypical pathogens. It acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and cell division, resulting in rapid bacterial cell death.

Supaquin® is indicated for the treatment of susceptible bacterial infections in adults. It offers excellent oral bioavailability, allowing effective systemic therapy with convenient once-daily dosing.

Indications

Supaquin® is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible microorganisms, including:

  • Community-acquired pneumonia
  • Acute bacterial sinusitis
  • Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
  • Complicated and uncomplicated urinary tract infections
  • Acute pyelonephritis
  • Chronic bacterial prostatitis
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Complicated intra-abdominal infections (in combination with appropriate antimicrobial agents where indicated)
  • Hospital-acquired pneumonia (where appropriate)
  • Post-exposure inhalational anthrax
  • Plague, including pneumonic and septicaemic plague (where recommended)

Supaquin® should be reserved for infections where alternative treatment options are not appropriate, in accordance with antimicrobial stewardship guidelines.

Contraindications

Supaquin® is contraindicated in patients with:

  • Known hypersensitivity to Levofloxacin, other fluoroquinolones, or any component of the formulation.
  • History of tendon disorders (e.g., tendon rupture or tendinitis) related to quinolone therapy.
  • Epilepsy or other seizure disorders where quinolones are contraindicated.
  • Pregnancy.
  • Breastfeeding.
  • Children and adolescents below 18 years of age due to the risk of cartilage damage in growing individuals.

Use with caution in patients with renal impairment, elderly patients, those receiving corticosteroids, patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, diabetes mellitus, or those with risk factors for QT interval prolongation or aortic aneurysm/dissection.

Dosage and Administration

Supaquin® should be taken orally once daily, with or without food, and swallowed with plenty of water. Avoid taking it simultaneously with iron, zinc, magnesium, aluminium-containing antacids, or sucralfate, as these may reduce absorption.

Adults

The recommended dosage depends on the type and severity of the infection:

  • Community-acquired pneumonia: 500 mg once or twice daily for 7–14 days
  • Acute bacterial sinusitis: 500 mg once daily for 10–14 days
  • Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis: 500 mg once daily for 7 days
  • Complicated urinary tract infections: 500 mg once daily for 7–14 days
  • Acute pyelonephritis: 500 mg once daily for 7–10 days
  • Chronic bacterial prostatitis: 500 mg once daily for 28 days
  • Skin and soft tissue infections: 500 mg once or twice daily for 7–14 days

Patients with Renal Impairment

  • Dose adjustment is required according to creatinine clearance.

Duration of Therapy

Treatment should be continued for 48–72 hours after fever subsides or evidence of bacterial eradication has been obtained, and the full prescribed course should be completed.
