What is BPH

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is defined as a benign (non cancerous) enlargement of the prostate gland caused by the growth of new cells
  • One of the most common conditions affecting older men which can lead to lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS)

Development of BPH: Symptoms

  • Symptoms associated with BPH include the voiding and storage symptoms indicative of LUTS (Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms) and bladder problems including detrusor muscle failure with associated bladder emptying problems
  • LUTS is not specific to BPH – not all men with LUTS have BPH and not all men with BPH have LUTS

Causes of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms

  • In older men, LUTS is often thought to be caused by enlargement or obstruction secondary to BPH and may also be due to increased age or bladder dysfunction
  • LUTS may also be due to non-BPH conditions
    such as:
    • Urinary tract infection
    • Haematuria
    • Bladder cancer
    • Prostate cancer
